A dad-of-two stabbed the grandmother of his children before ordering the family Rottweiler to kill her while his offspring watched on in tears.
McCauley Caldeira had been smoking spice in the months before watching videos of Mike Tyson, Elon Musk and Albert Einstein which he said “opened his mind”.
The 25-year-old appeared to be “possessed by a demon” when he committed a “horrifying” attack on his family on August 27 last year.
Caldeira flew into a rage when his now ex-girlfriend locked him out of the house after expressing his love for her while rolling around in the mud.
His children looked on, crying hysterically, as they watched their dad bite their grandmother’s leg, stab her twice and then order his dog to kill her.
A 15-year-old boy passing by the house was also caught up in the midst of Caldeira’s behaviour after he commanded his dog to attack the teenager before punching him, while his family barricaded themselves in an upstairs bedroom.
Hull Crown Court heard Caldeira’s ex-girlfriend had ended their seven year relationship a month before the attack took place because she learned he was taking spice.
He had gone to stay at her home in the days leading up to August 26 until she noticed he was “acting strangely throughout the night and into the following morning”.
At lunchtime on August 27 Caldeira told his partner he wanted more food because he hadn’t eaten in days, before asking for a milkshake and accusing her of attempting to poison him.
When the grandma of his children turned up at the house later that day, he repeatedly apologised to her, kissed her neck and saying he loved her.
“She was in the kitchen with her daughter and two grandchildren when the defendant came into the room and then ran outside,” said prosecuting barrister Michele Stuart-Lofthouse.
“He started rolling around in the mud saying that he loved nature and the earth.”
The grandmother tried to lock the door to keep her and the children safe during Caldeira’s strange behaviour.
However, he managed to push through the door into the house and started shouting “this is my f* house and my f* kids” before locking the door and keeping hold of the key.
A dog bowl filled with water had been spilled and as Caldeira lunged at the children’s grandmother the pair slipped on the floor.
He then bit her on the right leg before getting back to his feet and picking up a knife with a six-inch blade.
“He lunged towards her stabbing her in the back,” said Ms Stuart-Lofthouse.
“She was of course terrified thinking this was going to be the last time she would see her family.
“She could see her grandchildren crying hysterically.”
When she turned around Caldeira stabbed her in the chest with the knife.
Because she was wearing a thick coat the knife was prevented from causing serious injury.
Caldeira then instructed his Rottweiler to attack the grandmother, prompting the animal to bite and hold onto her left arm.
“F* attack her, f* kill her,” Caldeira shouted until the dog let go and his partner managed to take the knife out of his hand, cutting her finger in the process.
The enraged dad then went out of the house by the back door, prompting the family to run upstairs and barricade themselves in a bedroom, pulling a wardrobe down behind the door.
A 15-year-old boy was walking past the house while Caldeira was shouting in the garden with no top on and the dog running around in the street “out of control”.
As he did Caldeira shouted “that’s them you are looking for, get them” to his dog, which latched onto the teenager’s left arm.
While he desperately tried to shake it off, Caldeira punched him in the face, causing bruising and swelling.
Caldeira then went back into the house and upstairs towards the bedroom but was stopped from gaining entry until the police arrived.
He commanded his dog to “bite them all” but officers managed to detain him and take him to the police station.
He told officers that has arm was broken and he needed treatment, despite having been seen doing press-ups in the cell.
Caldeira then stripped naked before defecating in the middle of the cell and wiping his own faeces onto the intercom.
After trying to obtain data from Caldeira he proceeded to lash out at officers as they tried to take him back to his cell.
“When he was interviewed he wanted to know what other statements were provided and said ‘you tell me what they said and I will tell you what I know’,” the lawyer said.
“He said his mind opened when he watched videos of Mike Tyson, Elon Musk and Albert Einstein and understanding his Theory of Relativity.
“When he was asked about saying he loved the earth he denied taking drugs to make him feel like this and that he was not sure why they were stopping him from getting inside the house.
“He denied taking drugs at that time and denied taking any of the sort before this incident.”
Caldeira appeared at Hull Crown Court on March 12, his 25th birthday, to be sentenced for six offences including threats to kill, wounding with intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, affray and assault of an emergency worker.
Mitigating barrister revealed that Caldeira had a fear of knives after he was the victim of a violent attack himself three years ago.
“He has struggled to believe that he could have picked up a knife in front of his young children to a person he loved. He can’t explain why this situation happened and he can’t understand how he could have behaved in such a manner to those he loved.
“He says ‘I feel sick that it happened I’m ill thinking about it’. There is no doubt that this young man is a good father to his two children. He loves them dearly.
“He has struggled with narcotics for a long time. What he will say is that he will not want to touch drugs again. He doesn’t want to be dependent on them as he has seen the harm they can do.”
Recorder Brooke QC described the incident as “a horrifying situation” and that it was “pure luck” that the children’s grandmother was not seriously injured.
Caldeira, of Wellsted Street, west Hull, was sentenced to a total total of six years and nine months prison as well as three years on extended licence.
